By 2026, a majority of the content people read online has been touched by an AI model in some way — drafted, summarized, translated, rewritten or fully generated. That has changed how readers behave. Before they trust an article, a review or a product description, they often pause and ask one quiet question: is this AI?

The question isn't really about technology. It's about trust. People want to know whether a human verified what they're reading, whether the source is real, and whether the recommendation comes from genuine experience or a statistical guess.

Common signs that text was written by AI

  • Unnaturally even rhythm — paragraphs of nearly identical length, sentences with similar cadence, very few short or punchy lines.
  • Soft hedging language — "it's important to note", "in today's fast-paced world", "various factors", "a wide range of".
  • Generic examples — "Company A" and "Product X" instead of specific brands, prices, dates or screenshots.
  • Confident but vague claims — strong statements with no source, no number, no quote and no link.
  • List-then-summarize structure — a bulleted list followed by a paragraph that simply restates the list.

Common signs in AI-generated images

  • Hands, teeth and ears with subtle distortions.
  • Background text that looks like letters but isn't real words.
  • Reflections, jewelry or fabric patterns that don't quite line up.
  • Lighting that looks studio-perfect on a supposedly candid photo.

What "is this AI?" means for an AI answer

When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a question, the answer itself is AI — but the sources behind it may or may not be. The trustworthy version of an AI answer cites real publications, real product pages, real reviewers and real data. The untrustworthy version invents a confident summary with no verifiable backing.

That's why "is this AI?" is the wrong question for a brand to obsess over. The better question is: "if a buyer asks an AI assistant about us, what does it say, and which sources does it use?"

How AI detectors actually perform

AI-detection tools can be useful as a signal, but they are not proof. They tend to flag well-edited human writing as AI, and they often miss AI text that has been lightly rewritten by a person. Treat detector scores like a smoke alarm: worth investigating, not a verdict.

What to do if you're a brand

  • Make your content easy to verify. Add author names, dates, sources, prices, screenshots and links to primary research.
  • Publish first-party data. Original numbers, customer stories and benchmarks are the things AI assistants quote — and the things humans believe.
  • Disclose AI assistance honestly. Saying "drafted with AI, reviewed by a named human" earns more trust than pretending no AI was involved.
  • Track how AI assistants describe you. If ChatGPT or Perplexity is summarising your brand inaccurately, that is a fixable content problem.

The short answer

Yes, a lot of what you read online is AI — at least in part. The useful skill is no longer "spot the AI"; it's "judge the source". Look for named humans, verifiable facts, real examples and links you can click. That's what separates content worth trusting from content worth skipping, regardless of who or what wrote it.
